There is nothing like a kitchen remodel.
Especially for those in the Boston area. Brand-new, modern appliances, stunning sliding drawers. A modern pantry designed with the Boston client in mind. Even a wave-shaped, modern kitchen island with a quartzite countertop. What more could the Boston kitchen guru want? Then, the fated conversation comes up in the preliminary planning. What about kitchen outlets? A clunky image avails. Generic receptacles lining your brand new and glossy white walls appear in fear.
But, fear not! In light of this, 2017 beckons a new generation of modern, premium outlets for the Boston consumer to channel all of his/her energy into (no pun intended).
Before we get started in the “what” of outlets, first we'll briefly delve into the world of “how” to follow the National Electric Code. Keep in mind that some stipulations vary, and one should always check limitations within their own area.
Modern Outlet Solutions for the Boston Kitchen
According to the National Electric Code (NEC) Article 210, “A receptacle outlet shall be installed at each wall countertop space that is 12 inches or wider.” Similarly, “At least one receptacle shall be installed at each island countertop space.” Any outlet installed beneath an island overhang does not count. Why? For accessibility purposes. Furthermore, outlets directly above a cooktop are not permitted. Outlets must be less than 20 inches above the countertop or directly below; and, cannot be directly above a cooking surface. Outlets can also be recessed into the back of a cabinet or niche.
Now, on to the fun part…
We’ll start with TRUFIG outlets. TRUFIG prides itself on supplying single and double gang fascia applications. These outlets aim to work with a variety of surfaces, i.e. gypsum, plaster, tile, wood, and stone. TRUFIG outlets come in a variety of colors for the eclectic Boston kitchen. However, TRUFIG outlets are designed to blend into any a modern, Boston kitchen.
Mockett Pop-Up Kitchen Power™ Grommet and Lew Electric Kitchen Spill Proof Pop-Out Receptacle Series
Two seamless options for the modern, Boston kitchen are innovative designs from Lew Electric and Mockett. Mockett's “Pop-Up Kitchen Power™ Grommet” affords Boston a safe, modern outlet solution. The “pop-up” feature included in the Mockett and Lew outlet variations incorporate tamper-resistant technology and a hardwire connection. A water tight seal prevents liquids from getting inside the outlets. Potentially wet surfaces seek refuge in the outlet's hazard-free design. Additionally, the same pop-up outlet feature offers a sleek outlet option in the kitchen.
Bocci 22 Alternative Series
Bocci and their “22 Alternative” Outlet series is a lustrous alternative for the Boston Kitchen. Similar to TRUFIG, the Bocci 22 is designed to pop into a receiving system set into a range of finish materials spanning from marble to wood. The genius behind Bocci's signature round sockets garners appeal in their ability to fit inside even a mosaic tile or glass finish.
Sillites Self-Contained Receptacles
Comparable in shape to Bocci, Sillites offers tactful design in their spherical, covered power outlets. The original “Self-Contained Receptacles (SCR)” is the smallest 120 volts 15 amp outlet on the market. The SCR mounts flush in window sills, mantels, kitchen islands, cabinets, baseboards, wood surfaces, and floors. The easily removable cover designed for safety and subtlety can also be faux finished to match the materials surrounding the SCR.
TEAM7 Special Outlets
Austrian wood furniture manufacturer TEAM7 offers an unparalleled addition to the modern Boston kitchen. TEAM7 heralds hidden outlet setups for the modern kitchen. Minimalist, wood design meets TEAM7’s special outlets. These Outlets are covered with the same materials used in the surrounding cabinetry. The covers are hinged to open out creating a small shelf should you want to charge a phone and etc. while you cook. When it’s time to unplug, the front cover is easily pushed up and kept in place with the use of magnets or a small cabinet pull.
Legrand POP-OUT™ OUTLET
Next, is the iconic Legrand POP-OUT™ OUTLET. A simple push to the square fixture reveals three sockets. The Legrand Pop-out is easy to install. And, with a patented shutter system, plugs are tamper-resistant to keep children protected.
Lew Electric Pop-Out Receptacle Series
Similar in conception to the Legrand outlet is a Lew Electric receptacle. The "Kitchen Stamped Steel Pop-Out Receptacle Series" is perfect for the modern, Boston kitchen. A simple push reveals two 20 amp GFI power receptacles with a waterproof gasket, tamper resistant outlets, and is ETL listed; "perfect for kitchens."
Task Lighting Angle Power Strip
Last but not least, comes a utilitarian option from Task Lighting. The Angle Power Strip outlet from Task includes a patented ANGLED, and power strip design. This allows the modern kitchen designer to place power exactly where the Boston client needs it. Flexibility and freedom from the interruption of switches and outlets warrants this outlet a winner. A variety of custom options, including HDMI, cat6 and USB devices, are available in the TR series fixtures while switches and custom lengths are available in all APS Series.
